Manufacturing

Apparel and textile manufacturing is extremely water intensive, the industry uses approximately 90 billion cubic meters of water annually, representing 4% of global freshwater withdrawal. The dying and finishing process accounts for much of this usage, requiring 25 to 180 liters of water per kilogram of fabric (Ellen MacArthur Foundation).

Annually, over 10,000 different textile dyes are manufactured with a volume of over 700,000 tons. Fixation of these dyes to fabric is dependent upon the type of dyes and fabric used, with anywhere from 5-50% of the dye, approximately 280,000 tons/year, discharged for treatment or into the environment (ZDHC).
